I received this Wizard of Oz matryoshka as a birthday present. The pictures do not do it justice. The doll is well crafted with nice, thick wood. The painting is wonderfully done. If you are a collector of all things Wizard of Oz, then you can't go wrong with this piece. And if you just like collecting unique and different matryoshkas, this is certainly a good one. It would look fabulous in either collection.

It was gifted to me in the shipping box- which was very sturdy and the doll was well-protected in a cotton sleeve surrounded by tissue padding. I have since ordered other pieces direct from Golden Cockerel, and it has proved to be a great seller. Very friendly, super fast shipping, and great packaging.

My 11 year old daughter loves these things, and we recently began collecting them - what a great present around $20 to add to her gifts at Christmas and on her birthday.

When I bought this particular doll, I should have looked at the dimensions - the biggest one is very small - less than 3.5 inches!

And I assumed I was buying what was pictured here - the black and red ones. But apparently you have to specify the color. (I wound up with purple.)

These dolls are a cute addition to her collection. Just not what I expected in terms of size and color.

O, the joy I feel!

The good people at Golden Cockerel have done it again. Crafted with unmatched precision, these dolls have taken my once meek collection to the next level. Indeed, it would seem that a mere caboodle with twenty-three sets of Russian Nesting "Angels" (as I call them, O how they brighten my life!) and their progeny would suffice in impressing onlookers, but with these opulent and tasteful pieces of glory front and center in my mahogany display case, not even the most accomplished of Nesting Doll aficionados could question my taste.

Every morn I pass the cow adorned upon the bulbous (but not corpulent) lower half of the largest doll, his genial eyes reminding me the world is but my oyster! Beside him rests the lambs, romping zealously through the lush grass, they seem to bleat a message that one and all should seize that childlike wonder that wanes with age!

I am graced by the splendor that now lies within not only the premises of my collection, but of the bounds of my soul, humbled by the presence of the divine! Were I not recovering from a compulsive hoarding disorder, these dolls would garnish every room of my abode.

All of the Star Wars Chubby nesting dolls are hilarious, but General Grievous particularly caught my attention before some others probably because of all the lightsabers he comes with. The dolls actually do fit inside of each other, however they all sit on little feet, that if you were to nest the dolls, the feet would have no place to go. Also, I was really disappointed when I put this together because the lightsabers didn't fit in the holes! However, with a little drill work, I was able to resize the holes to where they fit perfectly. It was a small pain, but if you have the patience it's worth it.

Not educational whatsoever, just fun to look at..

The Darth Vader Chubby is my personal favorite of the bunch. Like the other chubby dolls though, you can nest them, but their feet have nowhere to go. Still, they are very fun to look at. The reason I like this one the best is because the largest nesting doll comes with a lightsaber, and you can take his helmet off, then mask off to reveal his pale, deformed face, and you can even take his cape off if you want. At first my son ran away from this toy. Then I placed Eubie and Wayne by the TV. After watching TV for a while my son suddenly asked, "Where's Twinkle?" Once I showed him that Twinkle was inside Wayne, my son could not get enough of opening up each doll and getting the one inside, then putting them back together again. He also enjoys lining up the dolls by size. It's intriguing to watch him learning that the bigger ones cannot go inside the smaller ones, and that they can't fit in upside down. I am hoping that opening and closing the dolls will help him build his hand strength. I also think that the toy helps him relate the 2 dimensional TV show to the 3 dimensional real world. This doll was a good price but the shipping from Russia cost just as much as the doll. I was surprised as I opened the doll, there was a Russian coin inside! Maybe a good luck piece. The doll is light wieght and painted nicely. I recommend this as an inexpensive authentic nesting doll.

A matryoshka doll or a Russian nested doll, also called a stacking doll, is a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other. "Matryoshka" () is a derivative of the Russian female first name "Matryona", which is traditionally associated with a fat, robust Russian woman.

A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure which can be pulled apart to reveal another figure of the same sort inside. It has, in turn, another figure inside, and so on. The number of nested figures is usually five or more. The shape is mostly cylindrical, rounded at the top for the head and tapered towards the bottom, but little else; the dolls have no hands (except those that are painted). These dolls are not actually for children. They don't fit together very well, but, most importantly, they are not sealed at all. They have been painted and have had glitter applied, but the paint can scratch off with a fingernail. Who knows what type of paint this is, but I wouldn't want my child playing with it. All in all, pretty misleading and disappointing.

The nesting dolls I received after ordering this item were similar, but had one major difference. The smallest of the 8 nesting dolls was painted entirely yellow with just a black outlined face. It doesn't match the rest at all. At around $50 with s&h they really shouldn't have skimped on this detail. It really cheapens the set. On a minor note, the other 7 nesting dolls also had less detail than pictured but was acceptable to me at the price. I ended up discarding the 8th (smallest) doll and keeping this item as a set of 7 reasonably detailed nesting dolls.

I collect nesting figures on a variety of themes, and this nesting doll is one of my overall favorites. The Khokhloma Russian Nesting Doll is well-made and finely detailed--even down to the smallest doll, which is smaller than my finger nail. The faces are friendly, the eyes are expressive, and the ornate, floral designs are visually interesting. Even the wood smells nice! :) The doll is easily unstacked and restacked for tweens and adults; younger children will, however, require some help. Because of the smallest doll's size, this product should NOT be given to children under five years old or to any child that has a habit of putting things in his / her mouth.

How are nesting dolls educational? They are excellent for illustrating complex concepts where ideas are hidden within other ideas. I use them to teach observation, writing, critical thinking, literature, and mythology. [I developed my particular teaching method regarding the nesting dolls while working on my graduate thesis...soon to be published :) ] Nesting dolls are especially good learning tools for spacial / mathematical relationships, reasoning, and unity. They can be discussed as art and cultural products. They have a magical quality that celebrates mystery and surprise.

My daughter loves nesting dolls so I wanted to get her some newer ones and these are perfect. They are not for little children however, as they are smaller than I realized and the smallest doll is about the size of a dime. Overall though, they are as described with vibrant color and good quality wood.
